1. Eat a variety of nutrient-rich foods. For a good health, you need more than 40 different nutrients. For your daily diet, you should include bread and other whole-grain products; vegetables; fruits; dairy products; and meat, poultry, fish or other protein foods. 2. Eat sufficient amounts of whole grains, fruits and vegetables. You will have to eat 2-4 servings of fruit, 3-5 servings of vegetables and 6-11 servings of bread, cereal, rice, or pasta.
3. Maintain a healthy weight. Your ideal weight depends on many factors (e.g. your sex, age, height and heredity).
4. Eat moderate portions. If your portion size is reasonable, it is easier to stay healthy. The recommended serving of cooked meat is 3 ounces. A cup of pasta equals 2 servings and a medium piece of fruit is 1 serving.
5. Eat your meals regularly (on fixed times). If you skip meals, this often lead to grabbing unhealthy snacks or to overeating afterwards.
6. Reduce the less healthy food you like. If your favorite foods are high in salt, sugar or fat, you will have to make changes in the amount you eat.
7. Balance the choices of your food. When you for example eat food high in sugar, select other foods that are low in sugar. If today you don’t eat food of all the food groups, make sure that tomorrow you compensate that.
8. Know the weak points in your diet. In order to know your eating habits it is advised that you write down everything you eat for a week. Then compare this list, taking into account all the suggestions given, with your preferred diet.
9. Gradually make a change in your eating pattern. Making modest changes will add up to positive, lifelong eating habits.
10. Select foods based on your total eating patterns. When you like foods such as potato chips, ice cream or candy bars, eat them in moderation and choose other foods to compensate.
